Monumental is a project conceived of as both a film and a performance.

Monuments, architectures, statues, and works of art form the basis of a visual score interpreted by a group of 12 performers and choreographers according to a defined space and temporal constraints. Monumental questions the transmission and reception of images.

Through statuary, architectural heritage, and works in public space, the project and this group of performers displace the notions of figure, narrative, and form. Each selected monument is decoded and restored by actions, movements, and displacements.

Monumental is a project developed in the field of the visual arts. The Museum of Fine arts of Calais, the Frac Basse-normandie, and the Sainsbury Center for Visual Arts commissioned Jocelyn Cottencin to participate and produce a work for the exhibition «Monument».

During a first residency at the Centre national de la danse (Pantin, FR), Jocelyn Cottencin directed and shot a filmed version of the performance. But Cottencin wanted to deepen this work through a version for the stage, rehearsed and presented for the first time during his residency at the Musée de la danse (Rennes, FR) in November 2014. A second working session was held during the first half of 2016. The premiere of the performance piece MONUMENTAL took place at the Centre Georges Pompidou in April 2016 as part of the Center’s live arts program and in the frame of NEW SETTINGS as conceived by theFondation d’entreprise Hermès.
